Established in 1971, the Ambrose McGhie Medical Museum preserves the rich history of medicine in Hamilton and the surrounding region. The museum features an extensive collection of historical medical artifacts, while the Hamilton Academy of Medicine archival fonds has been entrusted to McMaster University's Health Sciences Archives to ensure its long-term preservation and accessibility for researchers.
Dr. Ambrose McGhie maintained an abiding interest in the history of medicine and was an avid collector of medical memorabilia. As Chair of the History and Archives Committee, he donated an extensive collection of medical books and artifacts to the Academy in the 1960s. His generosity laid the foundation for what became the Ambrose McGhie Medical Museum.
The Ambrose McGhie Medical Museum continues to preserve and showcase historical medical artifacts that celebrate the region's rich medical heritage. To ensure the Academy's documentary history is preserved for future generations, the Hamilton Academy of Medicine archival fonds has been entrusted to McMaster University's Health Sciences Archives, where it has been professionally catalogued and is available for research.
