About the Academy

Ambrose McGhie Medical Museum

A distinctive collection of medical books, artifacts, and archives, preserved by the Academy.

The Ambrose McGhie Medical Museum preserves the medical heritage of Hamilton and the surrounding region through an extensive collection of artifacts, rare books, and unique archives held by the Hamilton Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Ambrose McGhie

Dr. Ambrose McGhie maintained an abiding interest in the history of medicine and was an avid collector of medical memorabilia. He served as Chair of the History and Archives Committee and, in the 1960s, donated an extensive collection of medical books and artifacts to the Academy.

The Museum

The museum was dedicated in 1971. Its development has been carried on by a dedicated group of volunteers with an interest in medical history, and it now holds an extensive collection of artifacts and unique archives.

Visiting the Museum

The museum is not open to the public. Visitors must schedule an appointment in advance. To arrange a visit, please contact the Academy.
